Karen's Story

Growing up I learnt a lot about stress and the effects it had on my family. From a very young age I was taking care of myself. I walked myself to Kindergarten when I was four and my older sister walked to primary school. I couldn't imagine my own children taking themselves off to kindy, nor did they have too. Although we grew up in what seemed like a normal family environment many aspects of our lives were altered because my mother's addiction to prescribed anti-deppressants which totally changed her behavior and she could not function normally, even normal day to day tasks were exhausting for her.

It was virtually impossible to communicate with my mother due to her anxieties and problems. I grew up being very wary of my mother and in turn very wary of my teachers; some of them were scary Nuns. Any one who had Nuns for teachers in the 60's will understand a Nun's wrath.

The essence of Cherry blossom (Fun and happiness, sharing, serenity, satisfaction) cheeky, smiley, content.

Basically growing up I lived in my own world of fantasy and creativity, in my imagination I believed I had tamed lions, how funny I was. I played outside with the neighbouring kids which kept me out of the house. My sister a year older was an avid reader of books and rarely said, “boo” I believe this was her way of coping with our family dynamics. I on the other hand learnt to read my mother. At times she was good but mostly she had panic attacks or was depressed and stayed in bed, we had to be quiet in the house. I learnt to give her a very wide berth. In fact I thought all mothers were like mine. I tended to give them all a wide berth.

Even so my mother was a talented, highly-strung woman, an athlete, a pianist and dress designer, sewing elaborate wedding gowns. During the 60's her work was once entered in the prestigious Benson and Hedges Designer Awards where she was a runner up. Unfortunately she was prescribed valium in the late ffifty's. Valium was the new fix it all pill for housewives. Valium soon proved to be very addictive. Valium use for many ultimately lead to more benzodiazepines drugs, many years of depression, anxiety, stress and unpredictable behaviours. My mother would tell us not to answer the phone or open the door; we had to pretend we weren’t home. We hated that, but, I did understand my mother was not well. AND it was because of prescribed addictive drugs the doctors dished out and she could not live with out them. (she was addicted).

My father was totally different from my mother he was a fun and happy man. Although he was a heavy drinker, maybe to block out the hurt and disappointment life had dished out for my mother. He was a professional furrier by trade and worked nights in the now landmarked White Lady when it first opened selling burgers. My father was a great guy with a great sense of humour, was loved by many, sadly he died of cancer at the young age of forty-eight.

Twenty-six years later, after my father passed away, my mother found the courage to start weaning herself off her cocktail diet of tranquillisers with the help of a organisation called TRANX. TRANX helps those who have been affected by drugs and alcohol including prescription tranquillisers. Today this support group is highly recommended to anyone wishing to get help.

When leaving school I trained as a hairdresser. Hairdressing is a very demanding profession, every head of hair is different, every personality and expectation is different, my hairdressing career taught me even more about human nature.

A client introduced me to herbs and from then on I was hooked on herbal medicine and flower essences. I was amazed at how effective rescue remedy was it in times of stress and my interest in flower essences grew from there. I was keen to learn more about natural medicine. I returned to school to study herbs and naturopathy. I discovered the power of flower essences and discovered New Zealand Essences, All leading to my wonderful anti-stress range of Emotional Rescue body lotions.

Saving any person from a life of prescribed drugs is why Emotional Rescue body lotions were created, a natural anti-stress remedy for everyday. Wouldn’t it have been wonderful if the doctors had listened to Dr Edward Bach and prescribed his inexpensive and well-researched essences for anxiety instead of Valium? I wish my mothers doctor had known about essences and their healing abilities many years ago, many families have been effected by prescription drugs, many unnecessarily like mine. If your stressed reach for a tube of anti-stress Emotional Rescue natural body lotion, you'll be glad you did.

Choose natural before chemically confusing drugs.
